The Legislative Committee serves as the advocacy and policy voice of the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast (MIATC), actively monitoring, analyzing, and influencing legislation and regulatory matters that impact MIATC members at the local, regional, and state level. Comprised of MIATC members with experience in public affairs, government relations, environmental policy, and maritime commerce the committee plays a vital role in advancing MIATC’s mission to support a thriving marine economy, preserve access to waterways and keep boating fun.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Policy Monitoring: Track proposed federal, state, and local legislation, zoning changes, environmental regulations, and infrastructure plans that affect boating, marine-related businesses, boating access, and waterfront development.
- Position Development: Evaluate legislative matters and recommend official positions to the MIATC Board of Directors, ensuring alignment with the interests of members and the broader marine community.
- Government Engagement: Establish and maintain relationships with elected officials, agency staff, and regulatory bodies to effectively advocate for favorable policies, funding, and initiatives.
- Public Outreach: Coordinate with MIATC staff to educate members, stakeholders, and the public on policy issues, voting initiatives, and the potential impact of pending legislation.
- Legislative Events & Testimony: Organize and participate in legislative days, town halls, and public comment campaigns; prepare letters of support/opposition on key issues affecting marine industry.
Goals:
- Advocate for legislation, rules and regulations that keep boating fun and which promote and assure the continued growth of the Treasure Coast’s marine industry.
- Defend and expand public access to waterways, ramps, marinas, and working waterfronts.
- Influence infrastructure funding priorities that support marine-related commerce and recreation.
- Collaborate with allied organizations on statewide legislative efforts and coalition building.
- Maintain proactive representation in legislative processes to ensure early engagement and response to emerging threats or opportunities.
